Someone asked on our Facebook page about which handcart pioneers settled in Springville? Thought I could figure this out - maybe. After looking around online, I'm not so sure there is an easy way to figure this out. So, I'll do a little shift from that and look at all who were here in Springville in 1860 on the US Federal Census and determine which pioneer company they came with. Mormon handcart companies came West in 1856-1860, so 1860 seemed like a good place to start to see who was here in 1860 and determine who came in a handcart company. For an overview of the 10 different handcart companies look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormon_handcart_pioneers.

Son Thaddeus E Alvord is also listed on census age 4 months. On https://familysearch.org/tree/#view=ancestor&person=K2M3-K6T he is listed as Irwin Thaddeus Alvord. He was born in Springville 26 April 1860. So is a "native" pioneer as he was born before the train came to Utah which is how the International Society of Daughters of Utah Pioneers (ISDUP) designates those born in Utah before 10 May 1869.
Two other children were born here in Springville: Aseph Leroy Alvord, 8 March 1862 https://familysearch.org/tree/#view=ancestor&person=KWV3-V5N and Junietta Jane Alvord, 14 July 1864 (born after the 1860 Census.)
https://familysearch.org/tree/#view=ancestor&person=KWCL-8T7
Since our focus is Springville - Mapleton area, I won't list other children or Jane's 2nd spouse as they lived out of our area. You can find that information in the above familysearch links. They moved to Weber County in 1865.
Note: These pictures are from familysearch.org and have no details about the people. Top photo is linked to Simeon Riley Alvord and middle picture is linked to Jane Elizabeth Blanchard Alvord.
Found the 50th Wedding anniversary of Jane Elizabeth to her 2nd husband so will include it here. Ogden Standard Examiner, 1925-07-12 Pleasant View Couple in Golden Wedding Celebration. http://udn.lib.utah.edu/cdm/compoundobject/collection/ogden13/id/638/show/901/rec/3
2. Second family on Page No. 269 of the 1860 Census in Springville, Utah Territory:
Joseph Kelly age 53 born in Ohio, F (Farmer). Name is spelled "Jos" (first 3 letters of his name) with ending "h" - abbreviation for Joseph. He came with the Orson Hyde Company (1850), Age 44. (Link to Pioneer Overland Travels.) According to familysearch.org he was born 4 February 1806 in Butler County, Ohio. He died 9 August 1886 in Springville, Utah.

Elizth, which is an abbreviated form of Elizabeth (again the first 4 letters of her name "Eliz" with the last two letters "th") age 26. This large difference in age is a clue that she isn't his first wife. Census states she was born in Ohio. FamilySearch.org has her listed as Elizabeth Potter, born 18 December 1835 in Avon, Ohio; died 26 June 1905 in Springville, Utah. She traveled in an unknown company 1847, age 11 according to https://history.lds.org/overlandtravels/search?first-name=Elizabeth&last-name=Potter&birth-year=1835&death-year=
See https://familysearch.org/tree/#view=ancestor&person=KWVQ-L2P for more details about Joseph and Elizabeth and their family.

He traveled to Utah with the Orson Hyde Company (1850), Age 7 FamilySearch.org has that he was born 28 July 1842 in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, United States. His mother was Matilda Hull the second wife of Joseph Kelly. He died 8 March 1912 in San Bernardino, California.
John Kelly age 14, also born in Illinois according to census. He also traveled with Orson Hyde Company (1850), Age 5 He was born 30 April 1846 In Nauvoo, Illinois and died in 1910 in Texas according to familysearch.org. His mother was Matilda Hull.

George Kelly is listed as 8 months on census. He was born 1 January 1860 in Springville, Utah. He died 8 May 1923 in Springville, Utah, according to familysearch.org. His mother was Elizabeth Potter.
Sorry to say no more pictures are posted on familysearch.org at this time other than the one for Joseph Kelly shown above.
3. Third family on Page No. 269 of the 1860 Census in Springville, Utah Territory:
William Hildreth Atchison, age 62, Farmer (F), born in Georgia. William traveled in the Atchison-Pilling Company (1853), Age 58 (Link to Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel). His wife Elizabeth Hood Atchison, age 51 on the census was also born in Georgia. She accompanied her husband in the Atchison-Pilling Company, age 51. (Notice their ages on the census do not match up with the ages on the Overland Trail website.) The mark on the right side of the census indicates that neither could read or write. (Atchison is actually spelled Aitchison here in the census, but will go with more commonly used spelling. There is another Atchison family on the next page of the census, Page No. 270.)
The Pilling and Atchison families traveled to Utah from Kanesville, Iowa, in a small group with four wagons. See https://history.lds.org/overlandtravels/companies/490/atchison-pilling-company They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley 13 Sep 1853 with 13 in their company. (Other Atchison family members are listed further down the first page on the census and continues on the 2nd page.
William died 8 Oct 1865 in St George, Utah. Elizabeth Hood Atchison died 30 January 1884, in Apache, Arizona. This may explain why we have a picture of Elizabeth and not William as he died nearly 20 years earlier than she did.

4. Fourth family on Page No. 269 of the 1860 Census in Springville, Utah Territory:
Lawson Atchison (spelled Aitchison on the census.) He is the son of William Hildreth and Elizabeth Hood Atchison above. (See Family 3.) He is 32 years of age on this census, F (Farmer), and was born in Illinois. His wife Caroline is age 30 and she was born in Ohio. Next is listed three daughters: Emeline, age 10, born in Iowa; Maria, age 7 and Caroline M age 1 were both born in Utah Territory. On Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel, he is listed as coming in "Unknown Companies (1847-1868) (1847), Age 22" See https://history.lds.org/overlandtravels/search?first-name=Lawson&last-name=Atchison&birth-year=&death-year=
FamilySearch.org has a little more detail about Lawson, he was born 20 August 1828 in Jefferson County, Illinois. No death date is known at this time. He was last found on 1900 Census. So died after that time. See https://familysearch.org/tree/#view=ancestor&person=LV79-TTS&spouse=LVKH-MNT&parents=K27Y-8KB_LZTL-WTX
Lawson's wife Caroline Amelia Stanton is the daughter of Daniel and Clarinda Graves Stanton. She was born in Mayfield, Bollinger, Missouri according to Caroline Amelia Stanton Atchison in the Iowa, Pottawattamie County, Annotated Record of US Census, 1850. But this place seems unlikely as she is listed as being born in Ohio in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Censuses. Her father's life sketch on familysearch.org says they lived in Mayfield, Cuyahoga, Ohio. So think this is more likely that she was born in Ohio.. Here's the link to that sketch: https://familysearch.org/tree/#view=ancestor&person=KWVQ-VBL Daniel Stanton came to Springville in 1852.
We find family members in Panaca, Nevada in 1870 census. Interesting thing is that it is listed as Panaca, Washington, Utah Territory. Here's a little website about Panaca. http://www.lccentral.com/panaca-where-it-all-began/
Quoting an article on Wikipedia, "Panaca was southern Nevada's first permanent settlement, founded as a Mormon colony in 1864. It was originally part of Washington County, Utah, but the congressional redrawing of boundaries in 1866 shifted Panaca into Nevada." So that explains it. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panaca,_Nevada for more information.

Daughters Ann E, age 8, Lydia, age 5, and Cemira M, age 3 - all born in Utah Territory; also son Jno (John) W, age 9 months, also born in Utah. In checking FamilySearch.org his wife was Ann Bunting. She passed away 9 December 1859 in Springville, Utah before the 1860 Census was taken. See burial listing: http://parks.springville.org/burial-search-listing?id=5954. Son John W (William) age 9 months above, died August 1860. See burial listing http://parks.springville.org/burial-search-listing?id=6135 Interesting to note that his burial listing has him dying in August but he appears on the census which was taken September 3rd, 1860. Daughter listed as Cemira M age 3, is spelled Semira Maria Grange on FamilySearch.org.
